October 31 – National Unity Day
- Every year on 31st October the country commemorates the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhai Patel who is a pivotal figure in India’s struggle for independence and the first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister of the country.
- Under the chairmanship of Sardar Patel, the “Fundamental Rights and Economic Policy” resolution was passed by the Congress in 1931.
- He is known as the “Iron Man of India” and as the “Bismarck of India”
- He is also remembered as the “patron saint of India’s civil servants” for playing a pioneering role in establishing the modern All India Services system.
- The Statue of Unity, the world’s tallest statue on the Narmada River in the Kevadiya colony, facing the Sardar Sarovar Dam is dedicated to him.

Today in History: October 31, Indira Gandhi Assassinated
- On Oct. 31, 1984 Indira Gandhi, India’s Prime Minister for more than 15 years, was assassinated by two of her own security guards.
- She was killed by her Sikh bodyguards, Satwant Singh and Beant Singh, in the aftermath of Operation Blue Star by the Indian Army between 1 and 8 June 1984 on the orders of Gandhi.
